Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the Sannio (Italy)

The Sannio is the inland, hilly area around Benevento in Campania, Italy. Less famous than Tuscany or Puglia, but home to some of Italy's most distinctive olive cultivars. Here's why our organic extra virgin olive oil is worth knowing.

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the Sannio (Italy)

Where is the Sannio?

The Sannio sits in inland Campania, southern Italy, around the city of Benevento. Olive groves grow between 300 and 700 metres above sea level on calcareous, clay soils. Wide day-night temperature swings, cool autumns: ideal conditions for olives rich in polyphenols and aroma.

Three native varieties

We grow three cultivars in separate groves:

  • Ortice — native to the Benevento area. Intense, almond and freshly-cut grass notes, vibrant pepper finish. A statement oil.
  • Leccino — Italian classic. Balanced, medium fruitiness, artichoke and green tomato notes. Versatile.
  • Monicella — rare native variety. Medium fruity, elegant, long finish. Beautiful on fish and delicate vegetables.

What "organic" means for us

Our farm has been Bioagricert organic certified for over 20 years. No synthetic pesticides, no chemical fertilisers, no herbicides. Soil care via cover crops and compost. Olive fly defence via monitoring and natural products.

For us, organic isn't a marketing label — it's how our grandparents farmed before industrial agriculture changed everything.

Frequently asked questions

+What does "single-variety" (monovarietal) olive oil mean?
It's an oil made from one olive cultivar only (e.g. 100% Ortice). It has a more defined, traceable aroma profile compared to blends. Premium production.
+How does Sannio oil compare to Tuscan or Apulian oils?
Sannio oils have aromatic complexity similar to Tuscan oils (elegance, balance) but with more body and persistence — closer to a Coratina but with less aggressive bitterness.
+Is your oil certified organic?
Yes — Bioagricert organic certification, audited annually. Every bottle has a lot number traceable to the harvest.
